FALLEN STAR: Author, Activist, Murderer

Image
I learned that someone I once called a friend had been charged with the murder of her husband. Shocked doesn’t even begin to describe what I felt. The news was surreal, almost impossible to comprehend. It wasn’t until Star reached out to me from prison that the reality truly settled in—that someone I knew had taken another person’s life. The person I heard about in the news… the person described as a killer… felt so completely different from the person I knew. Star had some struggles, but a killer?!? Child Abuse Registry Update

Image
The proposal for a new law doesn't seem very exciting to most people but to two local activists, it is a beautiful thing.  Child rights activists, Donna Kshir and Lee Cougardawn Roberts have spent nearly a decade speaking with politicians, lawmakers, groups, organizations, and anyone who would listen about a state-wide public child abuse registry similar to Megan's Law. Pioneering Protection

Image
In 2007, three passionate women formed friendships through a non-profit organization devoted to reforming child abuse and neglect. They’ve since joined forces and are advocating for a Bill to establish the Pennsylvania Central Registry, an online user-friendly public portal. Similar to Megan’s Law, this registry would enable the public to search for and view background information on individuals who have been convicted of child abuse. READ THE FULL ARTICLE!

Rep. Aaron Bernstine supports Opening the PA Central Registry

Image
Pic: Rep. Aaron Bernstine, Donna Kshir and Lee Cougardawn Roberts There are 3.6 million cases of child abuse reported each year in the United States. However, it’s estimated that for every case reported, two cases will go unreported. Pennsylvania currently does not offer a public website to find convicted offenders, but PA State Representative Aaron Bernstine (R) who represents Butler and Lawerence counties is ready to change that thanks to two grandmothers, Donna M. Kshir (Clinton County, PA) and Lee Cougardawn Roberts (who divides her times between Clinton County, PA and Crestview, FL). READ MORE HERE!

Staying Positive

Image
It has been a busy year for Clinton County child rights activists and authors Donna Kshir and Lee Cougardawn Roberts. The two best friends and sister advocates have been petitioning lawmakers to open the Pennsylvania child abuse registry. The duo believes that opening the central registry will reduce the number of children exposed to child abuse and neglect. The topic has been touchy, to say the least, but Ms. Kshir and Roberts stand firm on their mission. READ MORE!

Local Activist Featured in New Book

Image
“Conner's Law - Kentucky” goes on sale this Friday… and it has a connection to a local activist. Fighting to change the law on any level is never an easy process. It can take years, and even then a majority of the time the proposed bill never makes it through the House of Representatives or sees its way to the Senate. Read Full Story!

The Push Continues for Roberts and Kshir

Image
Two grandmothers from Clinton County continue to petition to make the state’s child abuse registry open to the public just as the sex offenders’ registry is open to the public under Megan’s Law. Donna M. Kshir (North Bend) and Lee Cougardawn Roberts (who divides her time between Clinton County and Crestview, Flordia) are continuing to seek legislation to become law that would require the State Police to open the current private database of individuals convicted of child abuse offenses in the state, including their name, date of birth, the tier of the crime and the location the crime took place, according to Lexi Howard, an assistant and spokeswoman for Ms. Kshir and Roberts. After striking out with Republican State Representative Stephanie Borowicz the first time, Ms. Kshir sat down with Borowicz on April 5th. It was then Borowicz offered her support and suggested the duo meet with Republican Senator Cris Dush. Borowicz agreed to sit in on the meeting with Dush. The grandmothers h...

Renovo Area Outreach

Image
Pennsylvania has one of the highest overdose death rates in the country. Renovo, the once quiet, sheltered rural town has also felt the crunch. Renovo is hardly the town it used to be with Opioids, Methamphetamines, and Fentanyl, running rapidly, falling into children’s hands. In recent months, the town has relied heavily on local volunteer fire departments and ambulance crews to assist them in emergency situations. These incidents have placed volunteer rescue workers’ lives in jeopardy, reinforcing that a community cannot rely on volunteers alone, police protection is a necessity. Between the increasing drug presence, violence and lack of police protection Renovo is a breeding ground for destruction leaving many residents wondering about the town’s future. READ FULL ARTICLE! One Step Closer

Image
Two grandmothers, Donna M. Kshir and Lee Cougardawn Roberts, seeking legislation to become law that would require the State Police to open the current private computerized database of individuals convicted of child abuse in the state are one step closer. On April 5, Ms. Kshir and Roberts sat down with Republican State Representative Stephanie Borowicz to see if they could gain her support and sponsorship of legislation. This time around, Borowicz offered support and suggested the duo meet with Republican Senator Cris Dush. As an added bonus, Borowicz offered to sit in on that meeting. READ MORE!!

The Fight Continues for Lee and Donna

Image
Last May, Donna Kshir and Lee Cougardawn Roberts met with Republican State Representative Stephanie Borowicz to see if they could gain her support and sponsorship of legislation. However, Borowicz declined to support their proposal at that time. Refusing to give up the duo continues to meet with local politicians, organizations, and government officials in an effort to see their proposal become a law to protect children. READ MORE!!

On Tuesday, November 29 the Gross Room at the Annie Halenbake Ross Library had a sizable crowd come out to see local women, going through personal adversity and offering their words of encouragemen.
